Iranian Pro Footballer and Vivacious Wife Defy Rules of The Game
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Iranian pro footballer Mohsen Forouzan, the goalkeeper of Tractor Sazi FC was recently detained and then released together with his wife, model Nasim Nahali on charges of running a gambling agency and fixing games.
Forouzan was arrested by Revolutionary Guard Corps - reportedly monitoring or directing Iran's larger pro football teams - and then suspended from all football-related activities by The Disciplinary Committee of Iran Football Federation for one month after allegedly conceding goals in a match against Sepidrood FC in Iran Professional League while his wife Nasim placed a large bet against Tractor Sazi in her betting agency.
But this is not the first time Forouzan has been suspended. He was once again suspended from football related activities for 3 months due to his wife's "immodest" modeling pictures online. That suspension prompted outrage among some football fans who criticized the interference by Islamic zealots and intelligence agencies in sports. In an interview published in Persian, Forouzan himself drew parallels between the situation in Iran to that of North Korea: "We are a young generation different than the [conservative] elders. We abide by the [Islamic] laws but they [even] interfere in our private lives. It is becoming like North Korea... They asked me to make sure no website publishes my wedding photos illegally leaked by someone! Then they suspended me for pictures of my wife related to her advertising and marketing agency! They suspend ME for images related to MY WIFE's job which is a legitimate and authorized job!"
Corruption and scandals have plagued Iranian football for years. Earlier this month, legendary Iranian footballer Ali Dayi, after being fired as Head Coach of Saipa FC, exposed the GM of the team as a former Revolutionary Guards Intelligence officer who has changed his name.
While betting and gambling is forbidden in Islam, earlier this week Esteghlal FC's Deputy claimed that an average football match in the Iranian Pro League draws up to $5 million in betting and that corruption in Iranian football has become systemic.
Last year, Adel Ferdosipour, the host of the most popular sports program on Iranian TV was forced to retire due to his democratic style and exposing undercurrents in Iranian football. The TV program was suspended after about 20 years.
