Iranian Volleyball Team Defeats Japan's Panasonic in Epic Comeback to Win Asian Club Championship
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: In a stunning comeback, the Shahrdari Varamin volleyball team from Iran defeated Japan’s Panasonic Panthers in the final showdown of the 2019 Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship at the University of Taipei (Tianmu) Gymnasium to claim the championship title for Iran for the fourth consecutive year.
The hard-fought 25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 20-25, 16-14 win not only gave Varamin a sweet revenge for their 2-3 loss to the Japanese side in the top-8 playoff match last week but also stretched title-holders Iran's domination at the topflight competition to 14 overall including four times in a row.
Led by tournament MVP Alireza Jalali and Purya Fayazi Damnani who scored 19 points in the final, Varamin overcame their lacking performance in attack and took advantage of as many as 32 unforced errors from the Japanese side (compared to only 21 from the Iranians). After the win, the Iranians jumped for joy, but things turned a little bit sour as players of both sides almost turned the competition into brawl, leaving the referee and staff coaches of both sides to stop them and their aggressions.
Al-Rayyan (Qatar) won bronze and Chennai Spartans (India) ranked fourth in the standings.
In recent years, Iran has been a powerhouse in volleyball and now placed eighth globally in FIVB ranking ahead of countries like France, Serbia, Japan, Egypt, The Netherlands, Germany and Australia.
