Iranian Wrestler Wins Rustam-Hind Indian Champion Title and Mace Club

An Iranian wrestler, Pouya Rahmani, winner of the gold medal in 2019 World Beach Wrestling Championships, has claimed the Rustam-Hind or India's champion in the pehlwani type wrestling tournament held in Punjab. He was also awarded the mace club symbolic of the heavy weapon carried by mythical Persian hero, Rustam, from the Shahnameh epic (book of kings).
Pehlwani is a form of wrestling contested in the Indian subcontinent. It was developed in the Mughal Empire by combining Persian koshti pahlevani with influences from native malla-yuddha. The words pehlwani and kushti derive from the Persian terms pahlavani (heroic) and koshti (wrestling, lit. killing) respectively, meaning Heroic wrestling. It is likely that the word derives from the Iranian word "Pehalavi" denoting to people of Iranian descent.
A practitioner of this sport is referred to as a pehlwan while teachers are known as ustad (Persian word for teacher or master). One of the most famous practitioners of pehlwani was The Great Gama (Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt), who is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
