Iranians Make History in Summer Youth Olympics, Beat US, France, UK and Germany in Gold Medals
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Iran's youth athletes made history in 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, held earlier this month in Buenos Aires, Argentina, by securing a seventh spot in the gold and 12th in overall medals standings, and ahead - in gold medals- of countries like The United States, France, Australia, Germany, Great Britain and Sweden with sports budgets much greater than that of Iranian team. The Iranian team consisted only of 49 athletes, nearly 1% of the overall 000 athletes competing at the Olympics.
Iranians won 7 gold medals: 3 in taekwondo (2 men and 1 woman), 2 in wrestling, 1 in karate and 1 in weightlifting. Among other medals, Reza Bohloulzadeh won a valuable bronze in Gymnastics, a first for the Iranian team.
Some 4,000 athletes represented 206 countries in 32 sports at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. Among Islamic and Middle Eastern countries, after Iran, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Morocco and Turkey secured, respectively, spots 22, 34, 38, 42 and 45 in the overall standings.
