Urged by Iranian Fans and Football Star, Russian Model Covered Up for World Cup Draw
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Earlier this month, in an unprecedented move, Russian model Maria Komandnaya decided to cover up during the World Cup 2018 draw in Moscow to honor numerous requests by Iranian football fans fearing a sexy dress would mean strict state TV in Iran could ban the coverage.
Maria Komandnaya is known for showing off her long legs. Replying to Komandnaya’s announcement that she would be co-hosting the ceremony, one Iranian Instagram user pleaded: "I am Iranian. Our TV officials are very strict and censor your photos. If possible, could you choose a dress for the ceremony which is suitable so that we can watch the programme?"
Even Iran’s top football star Sardar Azmoun – dubbed “the Iranian Messi” – who plays for a professional team in Russia and is a friend of Komandnaya urged her to be careful what she wears.
Azmoun, who Maria recently interviewed, said: “Thank you Miss Maria for wearing the appropriate clothing and hijab for the drawing of the World Cup in order to show it on Iranian channels so all Iranians can watch.”
During the Draw for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, after Iran's state-run TV censored the ceremony because of the overly exposed hostess, Brazilian Actress Fernanda Lima, thousands of Iranians stormed her social media pages and left insulting and derogatory remarks because her dress deprived them of watching the ceremonies live and uncensored.
