Uzbeks Seized Cash Suitcase from Iran's National Football Team
Independent News/Events Search Engine, Kodoom.com: Early in October Iran's National Football Team, after a victory over Uzbakistan in a FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifying match, faced long delays and questioning by Police in Tashkent airport for unknown reasons. Iranian authorities now explain why. According to Amir Abedini, Marketing Director of Iranian Football Federation, at issue was a cash suitcase that was carried to Uzbakistan with $105,000 to pay for Team's travel expenses but was on its way back to Tehran with some left over cash - $65000 to be exact.
After lengthy questioning, Uzbak Police seized the suitcase and delivered it to the Iranian Embassy. Several Iranian footballers, however, accused Uzbak Customs officials of stealing their expensive football cleats from their personal suitcases.
In light of strict US-imposed sanctions i world banking system against Iran, cash-filled suitcases are the main mechanism Iranian teams and officials pay for travel expenses abroad. During the nuclear talks, even US negotiators paid Iran back some of her frozen assets in cash suitcases!
