Young Iranian Makes History, Wins World Chess Junior Championship Without a Coach
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/events, Kodoom.com: Parham Maghsoodloo, an 18 year old Iranian from the Province of Golestan, claimed an early and easy victory over powerful Grandmasters from India, Russia, China, Norway, Armenia and Germany, in World Junior and Girls U20 Championship in Turkey. Some commentators call Parham the "Magician from Persia" and a serious rival to current world chess champion Sven Magnus Carlsen from Norway.
Maghsoodloo, a chess Grandmaster with a FIDE rating of 2643, is from a middle class family and a graduate of Iran's gifted SAMPAD high school. He started playing chess since he was 9 and is mostly self taught. In an interview, after winning World Junior championship, Maghsoodloo says he has no coach and his main wish is to have a private professional coach and that he can be exempt from Iran's mandatory military service so he can continue attending International tournaments.
Winning three spots in the final 10 standing, more than any other country, the Iranian team had an overall impressive performance in the World Junior Championship. Besides Maghsoodloo who won the number one spot, Amin Tabatabaei was ranked 5th and Alireza Firouzja was ranked 10th in the final standings.
