Reza Moridi swears in as Ontario's Minister of Research and Innovation
For the first time an Iranian-Canadian has become a Provincial Minister in Canada. Last Monday, Dr. Reza Moridi swore in as Ontario's new Minister of Research and Innovation at Queen's Park after being named by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne as a member of her new Cabinet.
Reza Moridi (born in 1945 in Urumiah, Iran) is a Canadian politician, and the first Iranian-Canadian elected to a provincial or federal legislature in Canada. He is a member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) and Parliamentary Assistant, Ministry of Research and Innovation. Dr. Moridi, an award-winning scientist, engineer, educator, business leader and community activist who has lived in Richmond Hill since 1991, was first elected to the Ontario Legislative Assembly in 2007, representing the riding of Richmond Hill. He won his second term as Liberal MPP for Richmond Hill on October 6, 2011 in a tough battle with Progressive Conservative candidate Vic Gupta.
On April 10, 2008, Reza Moridi introduced a motion in the Legislature at Queen's Park proclaiming the first day of spring as Nowruz Day in Ontario. This was passed unanimously by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, recognizing the first day of Spring as Nowruz.
