Persian Square sign posted on busy California highway
Independent Search Engine for Iran-related News and Events, Kodoom.com: Drivers headed Northbound on California's 405 Super-highway, can now see a sign pointing out to "Persian Square" near Westwood exit north of Los Angeles.
Located on Westwood Boulevard between Wilshire and Pico, the pocket of Persian businesses and restaurants near UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) is in an area officially recognized by the City of Los Angeles as Persian Square, often referred to as Little Persia.
Persian Square was born out of the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 after which many wealthy Iranians immigrated to Southern California. Today, Los Angeles reportedly has the largest population of Persians (estimated at 500,000) outside of Iran, hence another nickname—Tehrangeles.
There are all kinds of businesses catering to the Persian speaking populations: Hair salons, Persian rug stores, grocery stores, book stores, travel agencies, and of course plenty of Persian restaurants.
According to a blog on Discover Los Angeles, it’s not just Persians who comprise the loyal restaurant clientele at the Persian Square. Foodies make special pilgrimages for adopted comfort foods like Persian saffron-pistachio-flavored ice cream, koobideh and other kebabs. UCLA is also nearby so several generations of UCLA students have also embraced the hearty Persian fare. It makes sense. The portions are big and the food is filling and healthy.
