"Wal-Mart copied Iranian American dentist's business plan" Lawsuit claims: Shah vs. Wal-Mart
A legal battle against world's largest retailer is probably as painful as a root canal but an Iranian American dentist has decided to do so. Bloomberg and several other sources have reported a major lawsuit is filed against Wal-Mart on behalf of an Iranian American dentist who alleges Wal-Mart and its former executive illegally copied an idea he pitched to them in 2008: "low-cost, full service dental offices in big box retailers."
The Layfield Law Firm filed, on behalf of Dr. Kianor Shahmohammadi - a prominent Iranian-American dentist in California - the Civil Conspiracy Lawsui against Wal-Mart and its former vice president of new business development. According to court documents, in late 2008, Dr. Shah came up with the innovative idea of opening low-cost, full service dental offices in big-box retailers. Dr. Shah pitched the idea to Wal-Mart, who committed to put-into-action his clinics; however, Wal-Mart reverted back stating that it was no longer interested in having dental clinics inside their retail stores. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart shared the proposition for the dental clinics with Kent Reeves, former Wal-Mart VP of New Business Development, and Ken Antos, a long-term restaurant business partner. In 2012, Wal-Mart opened a Dr. Shah inspired clinic in its Moreno Valley, California store, run by Defendants Christopher Comfort, Kent Reeves and Ken Antos. Dr. Shah alleges that the entire plan for the in-store clinic is an exact duplicate of the ideas he originally shared with Wal-Mart – down to the very type of dental chairs used.
With $ 447 Billion in 2012 sales, Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer and private employer. Wal-mart remains a family-owned business, as the company is controlled by the Walton family, who own a 48 percent stake in Walmart.
The Press Release associated with Dr. Shah's lawsuit indicates :"In an effort to restore the hard work of Dr. Shah, The Layfield Law Firm has taken action against Wal-Mart and others. Numerous laws have allegedly been broken with the launching and operating of Dr. Shah inspired dental clinics in Wal-Mart stores. Plaintiff has requested a trial by jury."
