Abadani Iranian, 2011 strongest man in Germany is a vegetarian
By The Persian Irish:
The Persian Elvis strikes! Yes, Mom always said to eat your vegetables and Patrik Baboumian, aka the Persian Elvis obviously listened! The strongest man in Germany, a vegetarian, was born 1979 in Abadan in an Armenian family - father from Abadan and mother from Esfahan. He lost his father and younger sister in a traffic accident and was raised by his mother and grandmother. He says being shy and bullied in school also motivated him to pursuse strength training.
At seven, he moved with his mother and grandmother to Germany. And yes, he is a vegetarian! In his own words, Patrik reports, “After being LW champion in 2007 and 2009 and HW vice-champion in 2010, I finally hold the German crown in strength sports in my hands. It was a very hard battle in the rain and I had to fight against my injured calf as well but at the end I was victorious! Now I have proven finally, that being vegetarian makes you a better athlete!“
One blogger criticizes Patrik about gaining bulk and mass from originally eating meat and steroids to get to this point and going “vegetarian” only in recent times. However, support for him overshadows the critics. It is about time, in my opinion. Other benefits of a vegan lifestyle, according to the American Dietetic Association: lower heart disease, lower blood pressure, lower type 2 diabetes. A balanced vegetarian diet consists of higher levels of dietary fiber, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C and E, folate, and other important nutrients.
But what about the nutrients found in meat? It is not as hard as you think… Nuts and beans, broccoli, soy-based yogurt, oatmeal, and dark leafy greens like collard and kale. Some healthy Persian vegetarian options include khorest gaimeh badamjan, khorest ghormeh sabzi eggplant kuku to name a few.
