Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg, a former Iranian political prisoner, has been elected Mayor of Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Born in Tehran, she fled Iran in 1985 after being persecuted as a political prisoner by the Islamic Revolutionary Court. Once in Germany, Eskandari studied psychology and received her doctorate degree. She ran her own practice as a psychotherapist and an immigrant counseling center for the German Red Cross.
From 2001 to 2008 she served as a city councilor in Frankfurt. She has been a member of the Frankfurt magistrate since 2008 and served from 2008 to 2016 as the head of the integration department. She achieved a third place in mayoral race in 2018 but won the 2021 election.
Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg is married to the psychoanalyst Kurt Grünberg. Her daughter from her marriage in Iran, actress, filmmaker and author Maryam Zaree, was featured in an article: "Born in Evin prison: An Iranian migrant in Germany." With Born in Evin, her debut as a film director in 2019, Zaree returned to the beginning of her life in Evin Prison. The film was awarded the German Film Prize in 2020. In the same year Zaree was at the Berlinale jury member for the Amnesty International Film Award.
