Iranian-American Astronaut Led NASA's Mission to the Space Station
The Iranian-American NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli has led a team of astronauts (European Space Agency's Andreas Mogensen, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Satoshi Furukawa, and Russian Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov) aboard the SpaceX Dragon Endurance spacecraft on Aug. 26 on a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The four crew members arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on Aug. 27 where they will conduct a six-month mission living and working aboard the microgravity laboratory for scientific research.
Moghbeli was born in Bad Nauheim, Germany but considers Baldwin, New York her hometown. Her Iranian parents, Fereshteh and Kamy Moghbeli, live in Delray Beach, Florida. She is married to the Sam Wald of San Antonio, Texas and they have two children (twin girls seen in the video) who will be missing Yasmin for the next six months.
The New York native earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering with Information Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Engineering Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. Moghbeli, an AH-1W Super Cobra pilot and Marine Corps test pilot, has over 150 combat missions and 2,000 hours of flight time in over 25 different aircraft.
Interestingly, some conservative media inside Iran have accused Moghbeli of supporting the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protest movement in Iran and of being a pawn and propaganda agent for the US government which is trying to undermine the Iranian regime by "using a former Marine pilot with a dark record in bombing Middle Eastern targets."
