Iranian-American confirmed as US Ambassador to Sweden, Despite Cruz
Despite being stalled and opposed for 500 days by Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas and a leading White House contender, Azita Raji, an Iranian-born American banker was confirmed last month by the US Senate as Obama's designated Ambassador to Sweden.
Born in Tehran, Iran, Raji completed her high school education in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she competed nationally as a downhill skier and chess player, before moving to the United States at the age of 17. She earned an M.B.A. in 1991 in Finance from Columbia Business School and has been a member of the Institute for Chartered Financial Analysts and the Bretton Woods Committee, an elite organization which supports international finance institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Earlier in her career as an international investment banker, she held senior positions at firms including J.P. Morgan, Salomon Brothers and Drexel Burnham Lambert.
Currently based in Northern California, Raji is fluent in Persian, French and English. She is married to Gary Syman, a former partner of Goldman Sachs. They have five daughters and seven grandchildren.
