Iranian Americans in the news, from sonic Hyperloop to councilwoman
Two Iranian Americans have been recently in the news. Shervin Pishevar, the technology venture capitalist behind Uber, and founder of SherpaVentures was featured on the cover of prestigious Forbes magazine for spearheading Hyperloop together with Billionaire friend Elon Musk (Tesla, Space-X).
Inspired by science-fiction type concepts, Hyperloop transports humans at sonic speeds inside capsules traveling through partial vacuum tubes. No pollution, airport delays, or air traffic congestion.
Another prominent Iranian American in the news is Anna Kaplan (Monahemi), A Jewish Iranian immigrant and councilwoman of the Town of North Hempstead, among the wealthiest and most populated towns in Long Island, New York, who is running for re-election (official website link).
The estimated one million Americans with Persian/Iranian heritage are, according to the US Census 2010, among the most educated and wealthiest immigrant minorities. Yet, as of now even in Southern California, which is the new home to at least 50% of Iranian-Americans, there are few (if any) large-scale Iranian cultural centers, movie theaters, organizations, clubs, or media. The Persian-speaking AM radio station, popular among many Iranians while driving in Los Angeles, is not owned by Iranians.
Kodoom.com is the only independent privately (Iranian-American) owned search portal and email list dedicated to community events and news and visited by 200,000 to 300,000 people every month.
