Iranian-born Women Shine in Canada, From Mashhad-Born Minister to Powerful Entrepreneurs
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Canada is now second home to an estimated 200,000 immigrant Iranians. The early wave of Iranian immigrants took pride in Nazanin Afshin Jam, human rights activist and model who won Miss World Canada title in 2003. Nazanin lives, along with her husband (former Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay) and children in Toronto. Since 2003, more Iranian-born Canadians have won titles or secured positions of national prominence in Canada. Women have been particularly shining in recent years. For example Iranian-Canadian entrepreneur, Shahrzad Rafati, was recently appointed by Trudeau to represent Canada in G20's Business Women Leaders (BWL) Task Force. Rafati is founder of Vancouver-based BroadbandTV (BBTV) which has become the third largest video portal in the world after only Google and Facebook with 33 billion monthly views.
Maryam Monsef the Mashhad-born Iranian-Afghan immigrant has been appointed by Justin Trudeau as the current Minister of Status of Women. She is one of the youngest ministers ever appointed to the Cabinet in Canada. Monsef had previously worked in Iran on relief efforts for Afghan refugees like her parents.
Gina Parvaneh Cody, born Parvaneh Baktash in Iran, is another example of successful Iranian Canadian businesswomen. Recently Concordia University received a $15 million donation from her and renamed its faculty of engineering and computer science after Ms Cody - the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science - making it the first university engineering faculty to be named after a woman in Canada. In 1989, Cody became the first woman in Concordia University’s history to earn a PhD in building engineering. Cody immigrated from Iran to Canada in 1979. After graduation from Concordia, she got a job to perform crane inspections at Construction Control Inc. (CCI; an Ontario-based engineering consulting company), making her the first woman to climb Toronto construction cranes as a machine inspector. Cody moved her way up and later became the president of CCI. She believes the best way for a woman, or anyone, to succeed is through education.
Iranian-born Elham Emami, was recently appointed as the new Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at McGill University. Professor Emami immigrated from Iran to Canada in 2002 as a dentist and also has a Ph.D. in Biomedical science.
Thousands of other successful Iranian Canadian women are also contributing to the Canadian society in professions such as as police officers (news link), teachers, nurses, doctors, Real estate agents, etc.
