Mirzakhani's daughter ineligible for Iranian citizenship because of father
Independent aggregator of Iran-related news/events, Kodoom.com: Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian-born Stanford University professor who was the first and only woman to win the prestigious Fields medal in mathematics, has died in the United States of breast cancer at 40. She will be buried in the U.S.
Iranians across the world, including government officials, have lamented her death and a monument is to be named after her in Tehran (news link), but as of now, her daughter Anahita is ineligible for an Iranian passport despite Mirzakhani's wish.
Iran's Islamic laws forbid citizenship to children of Iranian-born women and foreign husbands. Mirzakhani's husband, Jan Vondrák, also a mathematics Professor at Stanford, is neither Muslim, nor Iranian.
The law, however, allows citizenship for children of Iranian men and foreign women. Some lawmakers in Iran are trying now to amend the law to pave the way for Anahita's Iranian citizenship.
