Reza Moridi's tough Re-election as Canadian MPP with support of Iranian-Canadian Community
The Star reports that Dr. Reza Moridi, an Iranian born scientist, engineer, teacher and former business executive won his second term as Liberal MPP for Richmond Hill last Thursday night in a tough battle with Progressive Conservative candidate Vic Gupta. The victory over Gupta who runs a public relations consulting firm and enjoys support of the large and influential Indian-Canadian community, would perhaps be impossible without the strong and united support of Moridi by Canadians of Iranian ancestry.
Moridi is the first Iranian-Canadian elected to a provincial or federal legislature in Canada. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2007 provincial election, representing the riding of Richmond Hill. He is also the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Research and Innovation.
On April 10, 2008, MPP Moridi introduced a motion in the Legislature at Queen's Park proclaiming the first day of spring as Nowruz Day in Ontario. This was passed unanimously by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, recognizing the first day of Spring as Nowruz.
