Irish jig and stepdance: Fruit of religious bigotry
It is said that the Irish jig and stepdance were people's creative solution for a ban by the Catholic Church on dancing. The Church considered rhythmic upper body and waist movements as lewd, so people improvised a dance involving mostly their ankles and feet! So a religious and fanatical ban resulted in one of the most beautiful forms of dance today (see video below):
