Courtship or Khastegari: Golestan's Film About Traditional Marriage in Iran
Today, many Iranians choose their spouse after months of dating and courtship. But just a few generations ago, courtship was an elaborate and ceremonious process heavily influenced by the elders in the family. The following 1962 short film (Khastegari, meaning courtship in Persian) by famed Iranian director Ebrahim Golestan was part of a production featured by National Film Board of Canada offering an entertaining look at courting customs around the world in Sicily, India, Iran and Canada. Directed by Allan Wargon, the feature film contrasts the historic arranged marriages of Eastern cultures with the free choice of marriage partners in the Western culture.
Renowned Persian poet Forough Farrokhzad acted as groom's sister and was also Assistant to Golestan.
