Leila Hatami in trouble for picture from Cannes
Persian News Robot, Kodoom.com: Leila Hatami, famed Iranian actress of the Oscar winner "A Separation" was pictured in a partial head scarf and long dresses in the opening ceremonies of Cannes 2014 film festival. This year Hatami is a member of the Feature films Jury along actress Carole Bouquet of France, American actor Willem Dafoe, actress Jeon Do-yeon of South Korea, actor-director Gael Garcia Bernal of Mexico and Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, American director Sofia Coppola and China's Jia Zhangke.
Although dressed modestly, Hatami's greeting and handshake with the Festival's President, and specially "kisses on the cheek" have seriously angered Iran's media monitoring agency (Bashgah Khabarnegaran) (news Link) which has reported today: "This actress stretched her hand and arms, against our acceptable norms, and raised many questions in our minds."
Hatami who is fluent in four languages (story link), has been critical of treatment of women in Iranian cinema (story link), but it was her appearance and own "creative" version of hijab (modest women's clothing authorized by Iranian government) in 2012 Rome International Film Festival that prompted criticism by Iran's conservative Islamists (story link).
Since then Hatami has been watching her "creative" side and appeared in more modest outfits such as the one she wore announcing Cannes 2012 Grand Prix (Grand Prize) winners (story link).
Another Iranian in the spotlight in this year's Cannes is famed director Abbas Kiarostami who presides over the 2014 Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury, a panel of directors from France, Chad, Brazil and Norway. Iranian media monitoring agencies are not as sensitive to Kiarostami's alleged immodest life and affairs as they are to Hatami and other female artists.
