Vancouver International Film Festival Features Iranian Films and Women, Life, Freedom
This year, Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) celebrates its 42nd year. The annual festival showcases world-class cinema in one of the world’s most scenic metropolitan areas. And this year's spectacular roster includes great cinema from around the globe, live performances, talks, conferences and other unique events celebrating film and film culture.
This year for Iranian and international audiences there is a special focus on "Women, Life and Freedom," the women-led revolution in Iran for women’s rights and justice, which was sparked a year ago following the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran's morality police. Terrestrial Verses, a title harking back to Forough Farrokhzad's poetic works against patriarchy and oppression, features nine still vignettes. These life impressions are a commentary of the struggles faced by Iranians in their everyday lives. They feature uncomfortable, yet humor-like situations that are both thoughtful and provoking. Our second film is a multigenerational/cultural delight by the Persian-American, Sierra Urich, in her first feature film, "Joonam".
Joonam (a ubiquitous Persian term of endearment, literally, “My life/my dear”, which can be ascribed to anything touching, funny, sad or sweet) is a beautiful and intimate film about home and exile. Navigating barriers of language and culture, Sierra Urich embarks on a personal quest to make sense of her mixed-race, Iranian identity.
