Mahnaz Afshar: I had to Muster the Courage to Remove my Head Cover

One of Iran's most popular and outspoken actresses who was forced to live in exile, has opened up about her long journey in mustering the courage to finally remove her head scarf even after leaving Iran. Mahnaz Afshar, shared her views on Iran's recent "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement during a Press Conference about her new role in "Safe House," a political drama about suppression of free speech in Iran, currently on stage in Southern California (minute markers 7:39 and 20:39):
Afshar discusses how she was conditioned to obey head scarf laws inside Iran since her early childhood so when she left Iran, despite being free to choose her dress and head cover, and her moral objection to the government mandates, she subconsciously felt a legal and moral obligation to follow the conservative dress code in Iran. She also felt afraid of any reprisals if she removes her head scarf, so she chose to keep a partial head scarf even outside the country (as seen in the pictures).
While in Iran, the actress was constantly under attack by Islamic conservatives because of her liberal feminist views about religion and Hijab (mandatory head scarf for women). She was once married to Yasin Ramin, the reformist businessman whose father Mohammad Ali Ramin, a former ultraconservative culture minister under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, had banned several publications in Iran because of their reformist views.
