Religious Rap Music Now Popular with Iraqi Shia Mourners
Independent Aggregator of Iran-Related News/Events, Kodoom.com: A group of Shia Muslims in Iraq now use a style of religious (Mahdavi) rap music and songs during their mourning ceremonies for their Imams, according to a report by Euronews:
A group of Shia clerics support the use of rap style as a means to attract younger mourners, while conservative clerics condemn the practice as they believe music is forbidden in Islam.
Rap music in North America was rooted in explicit, sometimes derogatory, lyrics that express the trials and tribulations of the African American (black) minority and problems they face in everyday life. The free-flowing expressive "rage" music later became popular with whites and other minorities as well.
