BREAKING NEWS: Sanders, Varoufakis Form Progressives International to Resist Spread of Fascism Globally
The planet's fate in the 21st Century will depend on what now seems an inevitable collision course between the internationalist progressives - standing for international universal human rights to clean environment, basic income, education and health - and anti-globalist nationalists (sometimes called fascists by the progressives) - standing for tight borders, national identities and higher national military, police spending and independence. Both groups reflect reactions to the version of globalism spread by global banks in the 20th century, which has resulted in excessive power of "global" capital vs. individual labor and national interests. According to Common Dreams, with nationalist (fascist) movements on the political rise in the United States, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany and Sweden, the U.S.-based Sanders Institute and Europe's DiEM25 — the groups founded by Jane Sanders and former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, respectively — announced the launch of Progressive International on Friday with the goal of beating back right-wing forces with an organized "grassroots movement for global justice."
The Open Call by Progressives International stats its goal as "To create a global network of individuals and organizations that will fight together for dignity, peace, prosperity and the future of our planet."
Already several world politicians such as Ada Colau, Mayor of Barcelona, Spain and Iceland's "Anti-Trump" Prime Minister, feminist and environmentalist Katrín Jakobsdóttir, has joined the Open Call. Jakobsdóttir has and written on her Facebook page that the Progressive International represented "the struggle for general welfare, security, and dignity for all people."
