Iran's Olympics flag bearer insists on leaving Iran despite husband's ban
Independent source of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Zahra Nemati, Iran's Paralympics and Olympics archery champion and flag bearer in 2016 Rio Olympics has been banned/forbidden by her husband's order to leave Iran for an international tournament but she has persisted.
Iran's Islamic law requires married women to have husband's permission to leave the country. Nemati's husband, himself a Paralympics archer, is not happy about his wife's abrupt separation and request for divorce so he has issued a ban. But according to Tayebeh Shah Enayati, the Deputy of Women Fraction in Iran's parliament, Nemati was granted a special "sports" visa to be able to leave the country for the tournament, despite her husband's ban. Shah Enayati indicates: "It may be time for our esteemed clerics to re-consider or update this Ijtihad (Shia decree). For Ms. Nemati's special case, we worked hard to secure a special sports exception but we strongly advise women to stipulate permission to leave country as part of their prenuptial marriage agreement."
Nemati was originally a black belt in taekwondo before she was paralyzed in a car accident. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, Nemati won two medals for Iran, an individual gold and a team bronze.
