Video Blog: Iranians Defeat Russians and Americans, in Wrestling
Although the outcome of the war between governments of the US and Iran is still uncertain, Iranian people and national teams seem to have gained the upper hand against Americans and Russians in global sports arenas. Over the past two months (September and October 2026), Iranian sports teams and athletes achieved several major titles and podium finishes on the global stage:
World Wrestling Championships
- Freestyle Golds: Individual elite freestyle wrestlers pushed Iran's performance forward. In 61 kg, Ahmad Javan won the Senior World Title by defeating Russian Olympic/World champion Zaur Uguev 9-2 in the gold medal match. Earlier in his tournament run, Javan also defeated American wrestler Marcus Blaze 3-2. In 125 kg Heavyweight, Amir Hossein Zare captured the world title by shutting out Russia's Abdulla Kurbanov 11-0 in the final. To reach that final, Zare defeated American heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson in a tense semifinal bout (image).
- Greco-Roman Team World Title: In late October 2026, the Iranian Greco-Roman wrestling national team claimed the overall team world championship. Key individual achievements included a gold medal for Gholamreza Farrokhi (82 kg) and silvers for Payam Ahmadi (55 kg) and Ali Ahmadi-Vafa (60 kg).
- In the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, The Iranian freestyle team, despite travel- and visa-related stresses, won the Championship team title, finishing first with 180 points, beating out Russia (2nd place, 171 points) and the host United States.
