Nuclear Talks, Biden and a Heartfelt Letter by a Mourning Iranian Father

On the occasion of Norouz (Persian new year), a prominent German-Iranian human rights lawyer has published a heartfelt letter about missing his son who died in 2019 in the United States. Dr. Seyed Shahram Iranbomy was denied a US visa to attend the funeral of his 20-year-old son Irman (pictured here) who died in a car accident in Washington DC.
Iranbomy was born in Iran but has German citizenship and has lived in Germany for more than 40 years. "I am more German than Iranian," he told DW. He said he was not interested in moving to the US. During Barack Obama's presidency, Dr. Iranbomy had received a 10-year visa for both business and leisure travel, but this was revoked in May 2017 after US President Donald Trump took office.
Iranian Americans seem frustrated about continued travel restrictions for Iranian-born visa applicants like Dr. Iranbomy even during the Biden administration. Lifting travel restrictions for Iranian-born visa applicants could be a positive gesture of goodwill in the renewed nuclear talks with Iran.
The "Letter by a Father," includes Dr. Iranbomy's melancholic poetry in Persian about how the joy and energy of nature in each Spring (beginning of Persian new year), is reminiscent of his son's joy and love of Norouz (Persian new year). In part of the poem, he says for him Norouz now means "A mission to restore humanity and to fight pettiness and indignity... My son, I can never bid farewell to you during Norouz."
