Interview with Adam Shapiro: Israeli Army opened fire on peaceful activists
Yesterday Israeli Army attacked civilian ships carrying humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza strip, and killed and injured tens of peace activists on board the Turkish "Mavi Marmara" ship (pictured). Following the violent and unprovoked assault, Democracy Now's Amy Goodman interviewed Adam Shapiro, a board member of the Free Gaza movement, one of the groups that coordinated the Freedom Flotilla. Adam Shapiro (of Jewish heritage) is married to Huwaida Arraf, the chairperson of the Free Gaza movement, who was on the flotilla and believed to be kidnapped by Israelis.
The ships carried medical and reconstruction supplies, and children’s toys. Passengers include a Nobel peace prize laureate and a former U.S. congressperson, several diplomats, parliamentarians, statesmen, women and children from different countries. The ships were searched and received a security clearance by Cypriot Port Authorities before they departed, and at no time did they ever approach Israeli waters. The attack happened in international waters, 75 miles off the coast of Israel and Gaza.

Adam Shapiro references Rachel Corrie, a 23-year old American peace activist who was crushed/pummeled to death by Israeli Army bulldozer while she was trying to protect homes being demolished.
