Jafar Panahi Touring the US with his New Award-Winning Film
Simultaneous with the screenings of IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT across America, famed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi is touring the United States for the first time — all while crafting a new short film to document his journey. He will have stops in New York's Film Forum and Lincoln Center this weekend.
His new film "It Was Just an Accident" which won the Palme d'Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival is now screening across the US and received accolades such as one from Martin Scorsese: "A Beautiful Film. I have never seen anything quite like it!"
Panahi who won the Palme d'Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for "It Was Just an Accident" dedicated his award (in Cannes) to all Iranian filmmakers censored and exiled by the Ayatollahs. Panahi's films have frequently been banned in Iran, and his career has been marked by conflict with Iranian authorities. In 2010, he was arrested and later sentenced to six years in prison and a 20-year ban on filmmaking and travel. Despite these restrictions, he continued to produce films, including This Is Not a Film (2011), which was smuggled out of Iran for screening at Cannes.
