Philadelphians will enjoy music by Iranian-American composer
On October 18, audiences in the once Capital of the newly born United States, Philadelphia, will hear the world premiere of a new concerto for English horn and strings by Persian composer Behzad Ranjbaran and presented by Network for New Music, which The Philadelphia Inquirer has called the city's "premier new music organization." The Network Ensemble will present a rarely-performed quintet by American master Vincent Persichetti, as well as the chamber music of several of the hundreds of students he taught and inspired during his lifetime. The concerto is performed by Elizabeth Starr Masoudnia, Principal English Horn of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and 9 of the city's finest string players (Event link and Tickets).
Behzad Ranjbaran was born and raised in Iran. He entered the Tehran Conservatory at the age of 9. Ranjbaran continued his study of composition at United States and obtained a DMA from the Juilliard School. He has been on the faculty of the Juilliard School since 1991, he also teaches in Curtis Institute of Music.
Many of his works are inspired by Persian culture and literature. Persian Trilogy, a large orchestral cycle completed in 2000, was inspired by the Shahnameh of the 11th Century Persian poet Ferdowsi.
The concerto is performed by Elizabeth Starr Masoudnia, Principal English Horn of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and 9 of the city's finest string players.
Elizabeth Starr Masoudnia, English horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 1995, is also an active soloist and chamber musician. In April 2005 she premiered Nicholas Maw’s English Horn Concerto, a piece commissioned for her by The Philadelphia Orchestra. Her performance of the work was subsequently broadcast on National Public Radio. She has also premiered works by David Ludwig and Joseph Hallman on The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Chamber Music Series. She is a featured artist on a CD of Beethoven and Triebensee oboe trios, released on the ASV Quicksilver label.
A native of Philadelphia, Ms. Masoudnia graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with John de Lancie, former principal oboe of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Her teacher prior to that time was The Philadelphia Orchestra’s former English hornist, Louis Rosenblatt. Ms. Masoudnia is currently a faculty member of Temple University and the Philadelphia International Music Festival. She lives with her children and spouse, Sean Masoudnia, an Iranian-descent promoter of music and fine arts in Philadelphia.
