The Never Ending Saga of an Iranian Film Which Was Banned Three Times in 10 Years!

Kianush Ayyari's film Khaneh Pedari (The paternal house) is perhaps the only film in Iran's history which has been banned three separate times because religious conservatives do not like the way it portrays religious violence against women.
The movie which was produced 10 years ago with partial funding by the Cultural Division of Iranian Police Corps was initially banned for three years after release and only allowed limited screening in some film festivals.
The movie starring Mehdi Hashemi, Shahab Hosseini and Mina Sadati narrates the story of several generations of a traditional religious family living in the same old homestead in Tehran and committing violence against women.
The movie was banned for the second time for five more years until recently with some modifications it was allowed to be a screened under supervision of the Cultural Ministry of reformist President Rouhai.
But only after a few days, powerful conservative circles such as the Kayhan newspaper harshly criticized the release of the movie as an insult to Iranian religious traditions. Iran's Cinema Organization first defended the movie and asked critics to watch the entire movie to realize the movie is about fanaticism and not religious beliefs. Yet the pressure by the powerful Keyhan and the conservative Judiciary, close to Iranian leader, resulted in a third ban on the movie release.
Even The Police Corps, under the pressure of conservative Ayatollahs, now opposes its screening despite funding the movie!
