Iran's smart move to solar energy
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Despite recent claims by the Trump administration, foreign investment in Iran post-Nuclear-Deal is not only going to military programs but also to civilian airplane, automotive, oil and solar energy industries. Iran seems intent on becoming a major regional solar energy power house. According to Financial Times, Quercus, a green investment company in London has reached agreement with Iran’s energy ministry on plans for a 600-megawatt plant in central Iran that would rival the largest solar projects so far built in China, India and the US.
Iran has set a target to install 5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity — equivalent to about five nuclear reactors — by 2020 as part of efforts to meet rising demand for electricity while cutting air pollution and carbon emissions. The country’s sunny climate makes it especially suited to solar power generation.
Earlier this month, Norway’s renewable energy giant, Scatec Solar announced it was in discussion with Iranian authorities to build 120 megawatts of solar power in Iran with an ambitious plan of increasing it further to 500 megawatts in a phased manner. The initial project is currently under discussion and expected to entail an investment of about $120 million per 100 megawatts installed capacity, told Scatec Solar CEO, Raymond Carlsen.
In July, a 20 megawatt solar power plant was kickstarted in Mahan, kerman.
In Yazd, another sunny central region of Iran, authorities have issued 24 licenses for solar power plants totaling 455 megawatts of capacity.
