Thousands of Migratory Birds Mysteriously Fall From The Sky in Northern Iran
Health and Science News Blog, Kodoom.com
According to Iranian news agencies, some 6000 migratory birds (flamingos) have died and mysteriously fallen out of the sky into Iran's Miankaleh wetland on Caspian coast. Some local authorities have blamed food poisoning but results of an official investigation into causes are not released yet.
The Miankaleh wetland and wildlife sanctuary is important for the 250,000 migratory birds, including pelicans and flamingos, that spend each winter there to lay their eggs. The UN recognised it as a biosphere reserve in 1979, but overgrazing, illegal hunting and fishing, deforestation, and unauthorised dredging of water channels are threatening to dry up the wetlands.
