2023 Will be Celebrated as the Year of Rumi in Turkey
Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī or Rumi (30 September 1207 – 17 December 1273) was a 13th-century Persian poet, Islamic scholar and Sufi mystic originally from Greater Khorasan in Greater Iran. Rumi's influence transcends national borders and ethnic divisions: Iranians, Tajiks, Turks, Greeks, Pashtuns, other Central Asian Muslims, as well as Muslims of the Indian subcontinent have greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy for the past seven centuries. His poems have been widely translated into many of the world's languages and transposed into various formats. Rumi is among the world's most popular and most quoted poets.
Although most of Rumi's poems are in Persian, in recent years Turkey has dedicated efforts to celebrate Rumi and attract tourists to his Mausoleum in Konya in central Turkey, which is among the country's most visited attractions and among the world's most popular pilgrimage (shrine) sites for Dervishes and Sufis.
In a circular published in the Official Gazette, President Erdogan of Turkey stated that the life, ideas and works of the great Islamic scholar Mevlana Jalaleddin Rumi (or as Persians call him Molavi), brought hearts together, kneaded hearts with the dough of love and compassion, and fostered unity, solidarity and brotherhood with his knowledge and advice.
The circular references RUmi's poem that “We do not plant any seed other than love in this soil, we do not plant another seed in this clean field.”
2023 year will be celebrated as the ‘Year of Mevlana’ and within the framework of the 750th birth anniversary of Mevlana and events will be held throughout the year throughout Turkey.
