In Pictures: Largest Religious Food Offering For Little Girls in Iran
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Recently, Tehran's Imam Hussein Square and Holy shrine of Massoumeh in Qom witnessed thousands of girls between 3-10 years of age, attend two mega ceremonies, clad in black chadors or green scarves, brought by parents to the free food offerings (Nazri in Persian) in the memory of Saint (Hazrat) Roghia.
According to Shia Islam, Saint Roghia was the young daughter of the martyred Imam Hussein (grandson of Prophet Mohammad) who was later captured, tortured and killed by Yazid.
During the 10 days of the Islamic month of Muharram, Shiite Muslims around the world, in countries like Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Lebanon and India remember the martyrdom of Hussein, Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, who was killed in a battle in Karbala, today’s Iraq, some 1,338 years ago.
For Shiite Muslims Hussein is the rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad. The commemoration has also become a symbol for the broader Shiite struggle for justice as a minority in the global Muslim community.
Every year, in what some observers call the world's largest religious ritual, millions of black- or green-clad Shias in countries like Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan and even India promenade in religious processions and donate free food offerings on the anniversary of martyrdom of Imam Hussein (Ashura) and on the 40th day (arbaeen) after his martyrdom.
The events are somber. Memories of the oppressed and the martyred bring tears to religious attendees.
This year, some more than 70000 children under five taken by parents to Iraq for Arbaeen processions.
