Assasination attempt on powerful member of Judiciary and militia in Ahvaz, Iran

Shots were fired at Ali Afravi, a powerful member of the Judiciary Arbitration Council and militia (Basij) in the Southern Iranian city of Ahvaz. He survived the assassination attempt but suffered injuries. Attackers fled the scene.

Ahavaz is in the oil-rich state of Khuzistan, bordering Iraq. In August also there were reports of a massive explosion in the city but official reports did not elaborate any further on cause or details of that incident. There has also been several pro-reform demonstrations in the city after June 2009 election in Iran.
