Street in Toronto Named Urmia: From Trudeau to Afshin Jam, Cultural and Political Figures Honor Former MP Moridi
Independent aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com: Last month Reza Moridi, former Ontario MP and Minister of Research and Innovation was honored by cultural, business and political figures in Canada in a tribute gala celebrating his achievements. Speakers included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Kathleen Wynne (former Premier of Ontario), John Tory (Mayor of Toronto), Nazanin Afshin Jam (Human rights activist) and Hassan Daei (Iranian American Forum, opposition to Iranian government).
Persian and Azeri music were performed and a street sign imprinted with Urmia (Urumia), Mr. Moridi's birthplace, was offered to him by the Mayor. The “Urmia Avenue” will be located in Richmond Hill, off Leslie Street in a sub-division under construction.
Reza Moridi was a member of the Ontario Liberal Party and the first politician of Iranian ancestry elected to a provincial or federal legislature in North America. Richmond Hill, a northern suburb of Toronto, is home to a large portion of the 120,000 Torontonians of Iranian ancestry, who, in 2014, helped elect Dr. Reza Moridi, for a third term, to Ontario Parliament. He was also serving as Ontario's Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, and Minister of Research and Innovation.
In June 2018, Moridi was unseated by Daisy Wai, a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and of Chinese descent.
