In Pictures: Drug and Sex "Bachelor Houses" Shut Down in Tehran
Independent Aggregator of Iran-related News/Events, Kodoom.com:
The Deputy Chief of Tehran's Prevention Police has announced closure of 92 "bachelor houses" around Imam Hussein square, used for drugs and sex.
Tehran's only brothel during the reign of former King (shah) was shut down after the 1979 Islamic Revolution but prostitution has continued and spread across towns in the so-called "Bachelor Houses" often rentable for as little as 15000 toomans per night (about one dollar).
Bachelor Houses are often used by the poor or low income students. The wealthy often use their own second homes (apartment condos), hotels or legally engage in "temporary marriages" sanctioned by theocratic laws as long as it is properly administered by Islamic religious authorities.
Recently, a mixed group of 40 men and women were arrested as part of an upscale prostitution ring in a luxurious hotel in the city of Isfahan.
Drug use has also been on the rise in Iran. Although the real numbers are often not discussed, recently an official with Anti-Narcotics Corps indicated some 4.4 million Iranians (about 8% of adult population) use narcotic drugs on an occasional or consistent basis.
The Research Deputy to Iran's Health Minister has reported an 86% increase in death rates caused by consumption of opium.
